Class-8 girl wearing hijab triggers tension between Muslims & Christians in Kerala

A minor dispute over a Hijab at a school in Kochi, Kerala, has triggered chaos between the state's historically harmonious Christian and Muslim communities. The controversy began when an eighth-grade student at a private school, reportedly run by the Catholic Church, was denied entry for wearing the religious headscarf, citing a violation of the institution's uniform dress code.

While the school maintains a uniform standard, the incident quickly escalated beyond a simple administrative matter, becoming a flashpoint for deeper demographic, economic, and political anxieties. The incident occurred on October 10 when the student was initially asked by the school principal to remove the Hijab. While she complied that day, she returned the next day wearing it again, prompting the school to deny her entry until she adhered to the official dress code.

This refusal immediately drew the ire of the student's family and community members, who gathered to protest against the school management, alleging deliberate religious harassment. The situation grew volatile enough that the school administration was forced to declare a two-day holiday to defuse the brewing crisis.

The school administration later released an official statement, accusing the girl's parents of being politically motivated, claiming they were associated with the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), an organization often alleged to have links with the banned Popular Front of India (PFI). The school further accused the protestors of behaving poorly with the nuns working at the institution. They questioned why the student, who had previously worn the standard uniform, suddenly began insisting on the Hijab despite being aware of the dress code from the start of her admission.
